The mid-century design movement of the 1940s to 1960s gave rise to furniture that remains as relevant today as it was decades ago. Along the river in Tokyo’s Nakameguro neighbourhood, Mid-Century MODERN specialises in these celebrated pieces, introducing their enduring appeal to modern lifestyles.
Now entering a new chapter after 30 years in business and a move from Shinagawa to Nakameguro, the shop champions a relaxed approach to enjoying design classics. Equally important is its discerning eye for pieces worth preserving and passing on to the next generation.
Mid-Century Furniture Specialists for Over 30 Years

Mid-Century MODERN began its journey in 1994 on Kotto-dori, also known as Antique Street, in Aoyama. After operating in Daikanyama and Shinagawa, the shop relocated to Nakameguro in June 2025, marking the beginning of a new chapter.
With its mix of fashion boutiques, cafés and izakaya that come alive after dark, Nakameguro is a neighbourhood that invites people to wander. Yet vintage furniture stores can sometimes seem unapproachable, as though visitors need to know their design history or be ready to make a purchase before stepping inside. Mid-Century MODERN is working to break down those barriers.
The glass-fronted shop makes an inviting first impression, allowing people to see inside from the street. Those walking along the river can stop in on a whim, try out a chair and discover how it feels to sit in a piece of design history. The atmosphere is deliberately casual, making it easy to enjoy the furniture without the formality often associated with vintage design.
Where Form Meets Function in Everyday Life

Step inside Mid-Century MODERN and you’re immediately greeted by an impressive collection of chairs. The shop places great importance on keeping its displays fresh, regularly rearranging the furniture and organising events to ensure there’s always something new to discover.
Rather than presenting furniture as individual collector’s pieces, the shop focuses on creating thoughtfully coordinated spaces that reflect how people actually live. There’s none of the intimidating, hands-off atmosphere sometimes associated with vintage furniture shops. Instead, visitors are encouraged to take a seat, experience the comfort of each piece and picture themselves using it in everyday life.
The space also houses calif art gallery, with movable partitions that can transform part of the shop into a more expansive setting where vintage furniture and contemporary art come together.

Much of the furniture at Mid-Century MODERN comes from the golden age of American design, spanning the 1940s through the 1960s. The collection features celebrated designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and Eero Saarinen. Born out of an era shaped by postwar material shortages, these designs responded to the need for quality furniture that could be manufactured affordably, efficiently and in large quantities. Far from being precious collector’s items, they were created for ordinary people to use and enjoy.
One of the shop’s signature offerings is the Eames Shell Chair, which Mid-Century MODERN sells in an unusual way. Rather than selling complete chairs, the shop offers the shells and bases separately, a practice rarely seen even internationally. The interchangeable components allow customers to mix and match according to their preferences, creating a chair that feels personal to them. It’s a more demanding approach to managing stock, but one that puts the customer’s enjoyment of choosing their own combination first.
The shop also has an eye for rare and historically valuable pieces. Among them is a children’s stool believed to be one of the Eames’ earliest ventures into furniture design. Another highlight is a vintage Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with a Brazilian rosewood frame. The timber’s international trade became heavily restricted under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which came into force in 1975. These remarkable pieces sit comfortably alongside the rest of the collection, reinforcing the idea that great design is meant to be appreciated without ceremony.

Passing Design Classics to the Next Generation: The Lasting Value of Vintage Furniture
There’s more to vintage furniture than its timeless beauty. The shop’s manager sees the small scratches and signs of wear on older pieces not as imperfections, but as traces of their history. Each mark reflects the years a piece has spent in someone’s home, used and cherished from one generation to the next. Together, they give vintage furniture its distinctive character.
Rather than treating furniture as something disposable, the shop believes that well-made pieces should be maintained, repaired and enjoyed for generations. Its role is to act as a bridge between past and future owners, giving design classics a new lease of life by finding people who will continue to appreciate them. To maintain the quality of its collection, the team works closely with dealers in the United States, building trusted relationships that help them source rare and exceptional pieces.

Beyond its aesthetic and historical appeal, vintage furniture can also make financial sense. Unlike cheaper alternatives that tend to depreciate, quality vintage pieces often retain their value, making them easier to resell when circumstances change, such as moving to a new home. The ability to recoup some of the original cost adds a practical dimension to ownership and is one of the reasons mid-century design is being rediscovered by a new generation.
Rooted in Street Culture, Embracing the Diversity of Design
Mid-Century MODERN’s distinctive character also stems from its roots in street culture. The shop is operated by B’s INTERNATIONAL, the company behind influential fashion brands such as X-girl and XLARGE. This creative background is reflected in the shop’s unconventional approach, with half of the space dedicated to calif art gallery, where vintage furniture and contemporary art come together. It’s part of an ongoing effort to explore new possibilities beyond the boundaries of a traditional furniture store.

In recent years, the shop has seen a growing number of customers in their late 20s and 30s, many of whom began placing greater importance on their homes following the pandemic. As their interests expand from fashion into interior design, this younger generation is bringing a keen eye for aesthetics and an increasingly sophisticated understanding of vintage furniture.
Looking to the future, Mid-Century MODERN hopes to extend its influence beyond the home, with a greater focus on designing interiors for hotels and offices. Projects such as hotel lounges offer opportunities to demonstrate the versatility of mid-century furniture in different environments. At its heart is a simple philosophy: authentic design with history, enjoyed with sophistication but without pretension. From Nakameguro, the shop continues to share new ways of enriching everyday life through design.
