U NOSE SHOP Osaka: Where Fragrance Begins With You

U NOSE SHOP, a new concept from niche fragrance specialist NOSE SHOP, opened in Osaka in June 2026. The new format intentionally minimises the visual elements and stories often associated with fragrances, creating a space where visitors can choose scents intuitively, without preconceived ideas, and focus on “U” (you). We visited the store to discover what an intuitive approach to fragrance selection really feels like.

A More Playful Approach to Fragrance

When it comes to fragrance, some people may find it somewhat intimidating, complicated or something reserved for special occasions. In fact, Japan’s fragrance market has been described as a “fragrance desert,” reflecting how unfamiliar many people are with perfume.
Seeking to change this perception, NOSE SHOP opened in 2017 as a niche fragrance retailer. One of the brand’s missions is to establish a culture of fragrance in Japan, introducing perfume in a way that is “casual, pop, and just a little crazy.”

Building on the sensibility and expertise it has cultivated over the years, NOSE SHOP has now launched U NOSE SHOP, a new concept designed to make fragrance more approachable. The name “U” combines the idea of “You,” representing the self and the act of choosing fragrance based on your own senses rather than a brand or story. The Japanese character “遊” (yu), expresses the idea of embracing the freedom to enjoy fragrance without a single “right” way to experience it.

One of the biggest differences between NOSE SHOP and U NOSE SHOP is their price range. While NOSE SHOP primarily focuses on high-end niche fragrances, U NOSE SHOP offers a selection of emerging brands, mainly from Asia, founded after 2020. Its lineup is centred around fragrances priced in the accessible range of ¥10,000 to ¥20,000, making them easier to incorporate into everyday life.

An Intuitive Process

U NOSE SHOP uses “intuition” as its central concept, offering customers a new way to experience fragrance selection. Rather than searching for the “right” answer, visitors are encouraged to follow their instincts, whether that means trying a scent that catches their attention or choosing one that simply feels right. In other words, it is about selecting a fragrance at the moment a scent speaks to you and your intuition responds.

As part of this approach, product descriptions feature icons that indicate different fragrance categories. By following these icons, customers can discover scents that resonate with their own instincts and encounter fragrances they genuinely love.

The store also features a testing area near the entrance where visitors can sample fragrances without seeing the brand name or concept behind them. By shifting the focus away from visual elements and stories, U NOSE SHOP guides customers to discover the scents that naturally resonate with them.

Seeing Yourself Through the Fragrance You Love

Although fragrance itself is invisible, wearing it has the power to lift your mood, inspire confidence, and bring out the best version of yourself. To help visitors experience the feeling of discovering their own fragrance not only through scent but also visually, the store features mirrors created by glass artist Yuri Iwamoto, inviting you to see yourself wearing the fragrance you’ve chosen.

Yuri Iwamoto’s work extends beyond the mirrors. The lighting and sculptural installations throughout the store are also her creations, with their delicate yet playful forms and free-flowing use of light adding depth and character to the space.

Niche Fragrances and Popular Scents

Since the term niche fragrance appears throughout this article, it’s worth taking a moment to explain what it means. NOSE SHOP defines a niche fragrance as one that brings innovation or originality through its scent, visual identity, story, or a combination of all three, offering a new perspective on what fragrance can be.

These are fragrances that reflect the perfumer’s unique creative vision, often crafted with the same artistic intent as a work of art. What makes them especially compelling, NOSE SHOP explains, is the experience of wearing fragrances created with the passion and individuality of the perfumers and creative directors behind them. The result is a sense of becoming one with the fragrance itself. It is a uniquely luxurious experience, where self-expression and personal sensibility come together, and one of the defining elements of niche fragrance.

Among the many fragrances available at U NOSE SHOP, musk and floral scents are particularly popular. Their clean, soft character aligns well with the Japanese preference for fragrances that remain considerate of others around them. Easy to wear in everyday life, they also make an excellent starting point for anyone new to fragrance.

The team also introduced several brands available in-store, including their own label, KO-GU, along with a selection of emerging fragrance houses from across Asia.

◾️KO-GU

Founded in Japan, KO-GU focuses on eliminating waste throughout the production and distribution process while using high-quality fragrance materials to create authentic scents at fair prices. Its collection includes versatile eau de parfums that can be used on skin, clothing, spaces, and hair, alongside liquid soaps, lip balms, hand creams, and other accessible fragrance products. With a diverse range of products that bring scent into everyday life, KO-GU is also a great choice for gifting.

◾️Insenf

A niche fragrance house founded in Seoul in 2025. It was established by two brothers who shared a passion for perfumery, and the brand’s philosophy is to free people through fragrance. It aims to create sensory tools that awaken and release the inner sense of freedom within the wearer, even amid the constraints of everyday life.

The fragrance caps are also handcrafted from ceramics, with the unique expressions of the ceramic glaze harmonising with the colours of the perfume inside. Together, they embody a balance between East and West, tradition and innovation.

◾️Perfumer’s Journey

Founded in Bangkok, Thailand, the brand creates fragrances inspired by the landscapes and scents of the country, from memories of jasmine and green mango blossoms found in Thai gardens, to the sea breeze of Phuket’s yacht regattas and the golden sweetness of longan from Lamphun. Its collection captures the essence of Thailand through scents that feel somewhere between incense and aromatherapy, with a distinctly Thai character. The black wooden cube-shaped caps serve as the brand’s signature detail.

Fragrance holds a unique power to shape our memories and emotions. U NOSE SHOP is dedicated to exploring and sharing the limitless possibilities of scent. Step inside the store, and through its intuitive approach to fragrance selection and carefully curated collection, you may discover a completely new way of experiencing perfume.
