At THE FLAVOR DESIGN, you can create a scent that is entirely your own. With over 200 fragrance ingredients to choose from, the process of blending by intuition adds a subtle richness to everyday life. At the Shibuya store and other locations, visitors can experience the Flavor Shake, a hands-on process of crafting their own personal fragrance.
Blurring the Lines Between Scent and Taste

Founded 11 years ago in Minami-Horie, Osaka, THE FLAVOR DESIGN started as an unconventional concept blending made-to-order suits and coffee. Choosing the word “flavor” over “fragrance” reflects its focus on the intimate connection between scent and taste, as well as a desire to approach scent in a broader, more personal way.
At its core are three elements: scent, light, and beauty. The comforting aromas, the way light filters in, and the landscapes that leave a lasting impression while traveling all inform its philosophy. Driven by a free-thinking approach unconstrained by convention, the brand continues to create new experiences.
Flavor Shake: A Custom Blend from 200 Ingredients

At the heart of THE FLAVOR DESIGN is the Flavor Shake, a hands-on experience where you can blend a scent of your own. It originally began with DIY fabric mists rather than perfume, with the aim of encouraging a more casual, fashion-forward way of enjoying fragrance. This approach also connects to the brand’s roots in made-to-order tailoring.
Today, around 200 fragrance ingredients line the shelves in-store, each one inspired by landscapes and memories the owner encountered during their travels. The names given to each scent, such as “POPS,” are intentionally abstract. By avoiding ingredient-based labels like lemon or wood, the system removes preconceived notions and allows customers to choose scents purely by intuition.

Gift packaging and takeaway boxes are also offered.
The staff excel at translating even the most abstract ideas into scent. Whether inspired by an early summer morning or a wistful feeling, they quickly interpret preferences through selected notes and refine the blend with precision. With over 200 ingredients to choose from, each fragrance becomes a deeply personal creation.
A Pop of Color in a Minimal Space

A conveyor belt is integrated into the store’s distinctive interior design.
Among its locations across Japan, the Shibuya store stands out for its distinctly minimal design. In a district where diverse cultures and people intersect, the interior is deliberately kept as a white-based space. This reflects a desire for the colors of the scents created by each customer to bring life to the space.
While the brand’s theme color is blue, the neon signage outside the Shibuya store is intentionally unified in white. In this blank, pared-back setting, the act of designing a scent while turning inward becomes a uniquely immersive experience, offering a quiet escape from the city’s constant motion.
An Interactive, Immersive Perfumery Experience

Bottles can be customized with your choice of letters or numbers.
The process of creating a scent is filled with a sense of excitement, almost like an attraction. First, you select two to three preferred fragrances from a vast range of ingredients, then narrow them down through a careful consultation with staff. Through repeated trials and adjustments over two to three rounds, the scent is gradually refined toward the ideal result.
Once the fragrance is finalized, you choose the bottle color and cap material, followed by the final step of tinting the liquid. The color is blended on the spot, giving the scent a distinct visual identity.

In addition, you can have your preferred name or date engraved on the label. From wedding anniversaries and birthdays to marking a favorite name as part of fan culture, the stories behind each label vary widely.
Fragrance, Woven into Everyday Life

Beyond the DIY experience, the brand offers a variety of items that extend fragrance into everyday life. From best-selling fabric mists enjoyed year-round to roll-on perfume oils that can be applied with precision, each product is designed for easy portability and fragrance layering.
Also popular are diffusers that create a calm, soothing atmosphere, and incense that adds a more urban impression. The incense packaging features a graphic of the word “kō” (香), designed by a tattoo artist from Okinawa. The design can be read as both hiragana and kanji, the design reflects an original visual expression that hints at the brand’s apparel-driven roots.

Visitors to THE FLAVOR DESIGN include a wide range of people, from couples and friends to school trip groups, with women accounting for around 80 percent of customers. If giving a scent as a gift, sharing details such as the recipient’s style or interests with the staff allows you to discover a fragrance that best reflects that person.
Wearing a scent can offer a quiet boost of confidence and, at times, a sense of comfort and calm. Whether in moments when you want to feel motivated or when you simply want to unwind, these fragrances gently accompany different lifestyles. As a kind of everyday talisman that adds color to daily life, THE FLAVOR DESIGN’s are truly something worth carrying with you.
