Shibuya AXSH – The Dynamic Ao-Shibu Landmark Connecting Shibuya and Aoyama

Shibuya AXSH, located just behind Shibuya Hikarie, opened on July 8, 2024. This new commercial facility embodies the ‘TSUNAGI-BA’ concept, and aims to connect the area from Shibuya Station to Aoyama.

The pedestrian network in the east exit area of Shibuya Station has been designed to connect people and spaces, with plazas serving as gateways to both Shibuya and Aoyama.

For those coming from Shibuya Station, passing through Shibuya Hikarie is the easiest route. The outdoor plaza is a bustling and vibrant area featuring a large see-through screen and food trucks. Additionally, you can use the covered walkway on the 3rd floor of Hikarie to stay dry on rainy days.

On the Aoyama side, the gateway is located between the “Shibuya Police Station” and ‘Miyamasuzakaue’ intersections along Aoyama Street. This plaza is home to ‘NANZUKA PUBLIC,’ a public art project by NANZUKA Inc. It features contemporary art galleries and art bars, with exhibitions that rotate 2 to 3 times a year. The current installation showcases works by the acclaimed French artist Jean Jullien.

Floors 1 through 4 feature commercial spaces, while floors 5 through 23 are designated for offices. The commercial areas include 15 different establishments, such as restaurants with new concepts or first-time openings, art galleries, and a health check-up center. This diverse selection caters to the everyday needs of local workers, students, and visitors.

I visited around lunchtime on a weekday, and I came across many people from nearby offices wearing ID cards and women out for lunch. The atmosphere inside was relaxed, and even during the busy noon hour, many restaurants had only a short wait of about 5 minutes. Since dining in Shibuya often means dealing with crowded places and long lines, it’s refreshing to find spots where you can get in smoothly.

On the first floor, you’ll find a variety of casual, international restaurants perfect for lunch, including the Hawaiian café and diner ‘hale’aina HOA,’ the spicy curry spot ‘Spice Theater,’ and the Thai restaurant ‘Chao Thai.’

The second floor has a number of restaurants where you can enjoy a relaxed meal, including Japanese cuisine at ‘Nakai Shoten,’ Italian dishes at ‘TRATTORIA PIZZERIA 207,’ and Spanish fare at ‘Cerveza JPN.’

On the same floor, you’ll also find ‘NANZUKA TAKEN,’ an art bar by the contemporary gallery NANZUKA. This one-of-a-kind venue features original works by gallery artists, including sculptures by the renowned Hajime Sorayama.

In 2025, the third floor will feature the NANZUKA art gallery, which will collaborate with NANZUKA TAKEN and the public art project NANZUKA PUBLIC in the plaza to present a variety of distinctive events and exhibitions.

Shibuya AXSH seamlessly connects the vibrant energy of Shibuya with the fashion and art scene of Aoyama. It’s set to become a key landmark in the Ao-shibu area, injecting new energy and harmoniously bridging these two distinct neighborhoods.
