Nagasaki has long been a meeting point of cultures, giving rise to its distinctive ‘Wa-Ka-Ran’ style, a creative fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and Western influences. In December 2024, IHG Hotels & Resorts brought its Hotel Indigo brand to this culturally rich region, marking its fifth location in Japan with the opening of Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street.
The hotel is set within a nationally designated preservation district, surrounded by historic landmarks like the Former Glover Residence and Oura Cathedral. As a tribute to this storied neighborhood, the interior design draws inspiration from Nagasaki’s unique streetscapes and layered cultural history. Exploring the hotel and its surroundings feels like slipping through time, an experience that is both atmospheric and unforgettable.

The red brick exterior evokes the charm of Nagasaki’s historic past. From the rooms with balconies, you can take in views of the harbor.
The guest rooms are filled with playful design touches. Camellia motifs, a specialty of the Goto Islands, are subtly woven into the furniture, while the closet features an arrangement of ‘karakami’ paper inspired by the Dejima History Museum. Even the room plates are thoughtfully designed: the mountain-view rooms showcase silhouettes of mountains, while the sea-view rooms feature Nagasaki-style embroidery inspired by waves.

The corridors inside the hotel are inspired by the cobblestone streets of Nagasaki. The entrance and lobby lounge also incorporate elements that tell the story of the city’s historic streetscape.
Additionally, the bedside lampshades are inspired by the Western-style umbrellas that were first introduced to Japan through Dutch trade in Nagasaki. The design captures the image of a lady holding an umbrella, with the shade tilted for an extra touch of charm. Throughout the hotel, every detail invites you to connect with the city’s rich history, like a quiet exploration of its ancient stories.

The rooms are elegantly designed with a tasteful color palette of green, purple, and pink.
A highlight of the hotel is the on-site Restaurant Cathedréclat. The former chapel, with its impressive 10-meter-high rib-vaulted ceiling, comes alive with colorful light from the stained glass during the day, while at night, it is enveloped in a serene, cathedral-like atmosphere.
The dinner menu offers a fusion of Nagasaki’s Wa-Ka-Ran culture, blending Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch influences into each dish. The signature dinner course, ‘Blanche,’ features fresh, seasonal seafood from Nagasaki, combined with local ingredients in innovative ways. Staying true to Nagasaki’s culinary tradition, the course concludes with a stylish take on onigiri (rice balls), a nod to the city’s cultural heritage.

For lunch, enjoy dishes like locally sourced chicken and pork, the Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Burger, and Nagasaki Wagyu Nanban Curry, all served à la carte. Breakfast features a mix of Japanese and Western main plates, along with creative dishes prepared by the chef, served buffet-style. As a new hub in Nagasaki, the hotel offers a chance to experience the changing flavors of each season.
