Kompakt Record Bar, a renowned fixture of Seoul’s music scene, opened in Tokyo’s emerging cultural hub of Ikejiri-Ohashi in May 2026. Filled with rich sound from its carefully tuned speakers and bathed in a warm orange glow, the space has already become a new gathering place for the neighbourhood.
From Seoul to Ikejiri-Ohashi
Beyond the bustle of Shibuya lies the quieter but vibrant neighbourhood of Ikejiri-Ohashi. Behind a minimalist concrete façade, a single square window glows with a warm orange light. This is the Tokyo outpost of Kompakt Record Bar®︎, one of Seoul’s most celebrated record bars.
The driving force behind Kompakt’s expansion to Tokyo was Masaki Hirano, founder of SKO EXTEDIT. A longtime fan of the Seoul bar, Hirano was deeply drawn to the atmosphere Kompakt owner Jinmoo had created through music. “I wanted to create a place in Tokyo that was neither a club nor a conventional bar, but somewhere people could naturally gather around music,” he says. With that vision in mind, he brought the Seoul icon to Tokyo.

As Kompakt’s partner in Japan, BEAMS oversees the brand’s domestic operations. According to the team, BEAMS was chosen not only for its extensive network within the cultural scene, but also for its creative expertise in apparel and merchandise, areas the company plans to further develop through the partnership. Looking ahead, Kompakt also intends to expand its merchandise line, extending the brand beyond the bar itself through the idea of “wearing music.”
The Story Behind the Name Kompakt
The name Kompakt reflects both the owner’s background and the philosophy behind the bar. The first location in Seoul occupied a space that was far from spacious. Rather than seeing its size as a limitation, Jinmoo embraced it, believing that a smaller space could create a more intimate environment for experiencing music. Having previously studied in Germany, he chose the German spelling “Kompakt” as the bar’s name.
That philosophy of being small but full of substance continues to shape the Tokyo outpost. Rather than simply recreating the Seoul original, Hirano and BEAMS have blended the street culture and musical sensibilities they have cultivated in Tokyo with the distinct character of Ikejiri-Ohashi. The result is a version of Kompakt that could only exist in Tokyo.
Designed Around Sound

One of the standout features of the interior is the pair of speakers installed in the bar. The system combines Ojas, designed by audio designer Devon Turnbull, with the ON8 Small Club System, co-developed with Norwegian audio manufacturer NNNN. The speakers were chosen not only for their uncompromising sound quality, but also for their sculptural form. As one of the defining features of the bar, they blend naturally into the space while maintaining a strong visual presence.
The DJ booth is equipped with Technics’ SL-1200MK3D turntables, a favourite among DJs worldwide, alongside Pioneer DJ’s flagship DJM-A9 mixer.
The DJ booth is built into one section of the curved counter that wraps around the seating area. Positioned neatly in the corner, it naturally encourages conversation between the DJ and guests.
When it comes to music, there are no strict genre boundaries. Jazz, soul, funk and hip hop all have a place, with each selection guided by the mood in the room. While high-tempo tracks that clash with the atmosphere are generally avoided, the music is ultimately chosen to complement the space.
Equally distinctive is the bar’s philosophy toward sound. The term record bar might bring to mind a silent room where guests quietly focus on the music. At Kompakt, however, the goal isn’t simply to play records at high volume. Instead, the system is tuned so that even when the music is turned up, conversations remain effortless, and guests can comfortably stay for hours. Music remains at the heart of the experience, but it exists in harmony with the drinks, the conversations and the space itself. The result is an organic listening environment where every element feels naturally connected.
Landscape Products’ Interior Vision

The meticulously crafted interior was designed by Landscape Products. Guided by Kompakt’s DJ-first philosophy, the space pairs carefully curated artwork with a thoughtfully balanced colour palette to create an atmosphere that feels distinctly Tokyo.
Among the standout features is the handcrafted lighting suspended above the bar counter, created by Korean designer Lee Kang Ho. The sculptural fixtures resemble braided rope and cast a warm, gentle glow across the space. Independent dimming controls are installed throughout the bar, from the counter and seating area to the DJ booth and display shelves, allowing the lighting to be carefully adjusted throughout the day. This thoughtful lighting design creates an immersive atmosphere that shifts naturally with the time and mood.
A fitting companion to this thoughtfully designed space is the Kompakt Fizz, the signature cocktail beloved at the original Seoul bar. Built on a base of gin and elderflower liqueur, it is infused with Korean pear-flavoured Moonwalk Tea. Bright notes of lemon and soda bring a refreshing finish that pairs perfectly with an evening of exceptional music.

Cultivating a New Cultural Brand
Today, with smartphones and streaming services, anyone can access music from anywhere in the world, anytime. So what makes a physical record bar worth seeking out? Hirano’s answer is refreshingly simple.
“To be honest, I’ve never thought about it too deeply. I simply love records, and I love spending time with friends over a drink while listening to music. There’s something special about sharing the same space and experiencing the same sound together. It’s an atmosphere you just can’t recreate anywhere else.”
Just two months after opening, Kompakt has already begun to attract more than dedicated music enthusiasts. Local residents have also begun stopping by for a second drink, making the bar part of their everyday routine. More than just a record bar, it is steadily establishing itself as a cultural brand and a new crossroads for music, creativity and community in Ikejiri-Ohashi.
