Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Northern Alps, with peaks soaring to 3,000 meters, Nagano’s Hakuba Village is one of Japan’s top international mountain resorts. Every winter, it draws visitors from around the world in search of its famed powdered snow. In December 2024, this storied destination welcomed HOTEL LA VIGNE HAKUBA by Onko Chishin (hereafter La Vigne Hakuba), a small luxury resort with just 38 rooms. True to its name (‘La Vigne’ meaning ‘grapevine’ in French), the hotel is dedicated to Japanese wine, and has been making waves from the moment it opened.

La Vigne Hakuba is located in the Shinshu Wine Valley, which is home to five distinct wine regions. These include the Japan Alps, known for producing high-quality wines like Chardonnay and Cabernet. There’s also Kikyogahara, famous for its Merlot, and Tenryu River, where flavorful wines are made from various grapes like Pinot Noir and Koshu. Chikuma River, the largest wine-producing region in Nagano, is known for its cool climate, while Yatsugatake West Slope offers both red and white wines with unique flavors.
The wine cellar is filled with over 1,000 carefully selected Japanese wines, mostly from Nagano Prefecture. These wines are made exclusively from domestically grown grapes and produced in Japan.
The wines are selected by Hiroyuki Yoshida, who previously hosted world leaders at the Lake Toya Summit in Hokkaido. Along with the restaurant’s service staff, he visits each valley, handpicking the perfect wines while absorbing the passion of the producers. This dedication results in an unparalleled collection of wines, where the stories of the creators add an extra layer of flavor to the experience.

All rooms are designed as corner rooms with mountain views. The rooms and hotel interiors also showcase traditional crafts from the local Shinshu region.
